2 pieces

The first one is a comment about being trapped in religion (encaustic), and the second one is supposed to be how you can be trapped in culture/tradition (water color).

  1. I really like the idea for the top one! Very relevant to your concentration. A couple quick thoughts: Middle of the page.. may be good to have some of the red string go off the edge. but it may be intentional enough. not sure. Also, the green dot in between the hands.. it looks a little weird. are you supposed to be looking all the way through to the background? The cross hangs a little funny too.

I really like the bottom piece. She is very pretty! :) the dark lines are awesome. it is definitely its own style that is done very well. The concept is not as clear though. Also, I think you should think about how your pieces connect for future pieces. These two are very different and you might want to take one idea and carry it over to the next piece and expand it. Show "growth" with it.

  2. I agree with Monet that the second piece doesn't really illustrate your concentration, but I do like it. The muted colors are nice - they reflect the girl's somber expression.

The message in the encaustic is very not subtle. (It is, as they say, like a ton of bricks.) I suppose some people wouldn't like that, but I think it's nice to be able to look at something and know right off the bat what it's supposed to mean. (Explications would be a hell of a lot easier if Christie gave us poems like that.)

The hands do look a bit goofy, but considering you were working with wax and flame, they turned out way better than the could have. In a way, the goofiness works, but the piece would be really powerful if you could find a way to make them more realistic. I don't mind them being in the middle of the page (it looks okay, also I'd be *really* hypocritical if I did). I also really like the background color - that green-teal has always been one of my favorite colors.

  3. I think that the ideas on both are solid. On the top one, I am not familiar with encaustc, but can you add shading or something to the hands? The design is fine, but I feel like a lack of shading makes the foreground run into the background. I don't think that the middle of the page works on this one so much - the composition of the hands could be more interesting. I do like the gold chain though - well crafted and really helps the piece.

On the bottom one, I really like the hood and background and how the work together, but the head gets lost among it all. The bridge of the nose could use some more definition and I feel like there should be some defined hair. Also, some dark shadows on the face could make the person seem even more trapped within the clothing, plus it would make it a little creepy which would be cool.
